Developed by Chuck Lorre and Steven Molaro for CBS, Young Sheldon is a coming-of-age comedy television show in the United States. The Big Bang Theory spin-off prequel follows the main character Sheldon Cooper as he grows up with his family in East Texas.
Alongside Annie Potts, Montana Jordan, Raegan Revord, Zoe Perry, Lance Barber, and Sheldon Young, Iain Armitage plays the young Sheldon. The series’ narration and executive producer roles are shared by Jim Parsons, who plays the adult Sheldon Cooper on The Big Bang Theory.
From an original concept Parsons shared with the creators of The Big Bang Theory, the prequel series’ development started in November 2016. In March of the following year, CBS picked up the show, and Armitage and Perry were cast. Young Sheldon made its debut as a special preview on September 25, 2017. It was then picked up for a full season, which debuted on November 2, 2017, and began airing once a week. The show received a seventh season renewal from CBS in March 2021.

In accordance with a report from November 2016, CBS was negotiating to create a spin-off of The Big Bang Theory that would center on Sheldon Cooper when he was a little boy. The prequel series, which is characterized as “a single-camera family comedy in the vein of Malcolm in the Middle,” is expected to include Bill Prady, co-creator of The Big Bang Theory, in some way and is planned to air in the 2017–18 season alongside The Big Bang Theory.

For a full season of 22 episodes, CBS renewed the show on September 27, 2017. The second season of the program debuted on September 24 of the same year after it was renewed for a third on January 6, 2018.

Television halted production on March 13, 2020, leaving the third season with just 21 episodes. The fourth season’s filming got underway on September 22, 2020, however it was put on hold for a day on October 9, 2020, after a COVID-19 test came back positive. Casting

The Big Bang Theory character Mary Cooper’s real-life daughter is Perry, played by Laurie Metcalf. Sheldon’s father George Cooper Sr. is portrayed by Lance Barber; he previously made an appearance on The Big Bang Theory in one of its episodes.
Missy Cooper, Sheldon’s twin sister, is portrayed by Raegan Revord, who was only given the part after pleading with her mother to let her audition. As Sheldon’s older brother George Cooper Jr., Montana Jordan is a featured actor on the program as well. The series’ narrator, Jim Parsons, once again plays the adult Sheldon Cooper. As Sheldon’s grandma, Meemaw, Annie Potts was hired in July 2017.

“Mighty Little Man,” the opening tune from Steve Burns’ 2003 album Songs for Dustmites, is played during the opening credits of the program. In the first two seasons, the background features mountains and a desert, despite the fact that the show is supposed to be set in East Texas, which lacks mountains, has no tumbleweed, and is very green.
In contrast, the foreground features Sheldon walking out, standing triumphantly, spotting a cow, and then backing away before resuming his triumphant look as the logo appears and tilts to the sky. There are times when the cow is replaced by a tumbleweed. From Season 3 onward, the title sequence was altered to feature the entire Cooper family as well as Sheldon dressed as various characters, including Albert Einstein, Mr. Spock, The Flash, astronaut, and an engineer. In Season 5, a black bull takes the place of the cow.
