I. The Accident Unfolds :
On a fateful evening near the Bahanaga Bazar station in Balasore district, Odisha, tragedy struck as the Coromandel Express and a goods train collided head-on. The Coromandel Express was en route from the Shalimar station near Kolkata to Chennai Central station. The collision occurred around 7.20 pm, resulting in the derailment of four coaches and causing injuries to 179 passengers.
Immediately after the accident, several ambulances were dispatched to the scene, swiftly transporting the injured to the nearby Soro community health center. Simultaneously, accident relief trains were mobilized to provide assistance and support.
II. Rescue Operations and Loss of Lives :
The collision had devastating consequences, claiming the lives of three individuals. Among the victims were Kandhei Bindhani, her mother Parbati Bindhani, and Afzul Bibi. Tragically, two others sustained severe injuries and were rushed to the district headquarters hospital in Jajpur for critical medical care.
The impact of the collision was so forceful that it caused significant damage to nearby structures. One of the goods train’s wagons crashed into a railway foot-over bridge, while others collided with a passenger waiting shed. Prompt response from local residents and fellow passengers allowed for the immediate rescue of those trapped under the debris. The injured individuals were promptly shifted to a local hospital before being transferred to Jajpur for specialized treatment.
III. Disrupted Train Services and Recovery Efforts :
The train collision had a ripple effect along the Howrah-Chennai mainline, leading to significant disruptions during the morning rush hour. As a result, 15 passenger trains had to be canceled, while 21 trains were diverted and six experienced partial cancellations. To accommodate the affected passengers, more than 200 long-distance travelers were accommodated in the Hyderabad-Shalimar East Coast Express, while 45 local passengers were provided with free road transport to their respective destinations in Chandikhole, Jajpur Keonjhar Road, Bhadrak, and Balasore.
The restoration work was swiftly undertaken by top officials from the East Coast Railway, who supervised the process to ensure the affected rail tracks and structures were repaired and made operational as soon as possible. In addition, the Ministry of Railways ordered an inquiry at the level of the Commissioner of Railway Safety to thoroughly investigate the accident and determine its cause. To provide support to the families of the deceased, the Ministry of Railways announced a solatium of ₹5 lakh, while the Odisha government pledged ₹2 lakh as additional compensation.
