Murphy was born on May 25th, 1976, in Douglas, Cork, Ireland. He studied at Presentation Brothers College in Cork before pursuing law at University College Cork. He eventually quit college to follow his passion for acting.
Before starting his career Cillian Murphy had a strong interest in music and was a member of numerous bands. He was a lead singer and guitarist for The Sons of Mr. Greengen’s band. Although acting remained his major emphasis, he returned to music on occasions like writing music for the film Anthropoid (2016).
