Singer Georgia Holt:-Cher’s mother, singer and actress Georgia Holt, has died. She was 96 years old.
Cher, 76, said on Twitter on Saturday evening, “Mom is gone.” Cher said in September that Holt had “been ill off and on.”
“She just got out of the hospital,” the singer said. “She was suffering from pneumonia. She is improving.” Cher provided no other information Saturday, including a cause of death or a precise date of death.
Holt was the topic of an hour-long Lifetime documentary, “Dear Mom, Love Cher,” in 2013, which investigated the family’s history through conversations with the matriarch, daughters Cher and Georganne LaPiere, and Cher’s children, Chaz Bono and Elijah Blue Allman, professionally known as P. Exeter Blue.
“It’s a good Mother’s Day special, but it’s not Hallmark,” Cher stated at the time of the documentary.
Holt got the idea for the project after discovering records of an unreleased album she made with Elvis Presley’s band in 1980. Cher, determined to assist Holt in achieving an unattainable goal, had the tapes restored and then videotaped her mother singing and conversing. It culminated in a 16-minute movie, which was a “small treat for her 86th birthday.” It then evolved into a more revealing look back at an unconventional clan.
The singer-songwriter, actress, producer, and model was best recognised for her performances in “The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet,” “I Love Lucy,” and “Jane Wyman Presents the Fireside Theatre” in 1955 and 1956, respectively. She also appeared in films such as “Watch the Birdie” and “A Life of Her Own” in 1950, “Father’s Little Dividend” and “Grounds for Marriage” in 1951, and “Lovely to Look At” in 1952.
Holt released her debut record “Honky Tonk Woman” in 2013, which she recorded in the 1980s.
