Elijah Mitchell, a running back for the San Francisco 49ers, sustained a similar injury to his left knee just two weeks after returning from a sprained medial collateral ligament in his right knee.
Mitchell left Sunday’s 13-0 win over the New Orleans Holy people in the second from last quarter with what the Niners accept is a hyper-extended MCL in his left knee.On Monday, he is scheduled for additional testing. The Niners ruled Mitchell out near the end of the quarter, despite his initial status as questionable to return.
The first knee injury, on Mitchell’s right knee, occurred during the Chicago Bears’ defeat in Week 1 and kept Mitchell out of action until the Los Angeles Chargers’ victory in Week 10.The Niners and Mitchell, on the other hand, are hopeful that, unlike last time, he won’t be out for as long.
Christian McCaffrey, the team’s starter, and Jordan Mason, the team’s third-string running back, filled in for Mitchell throughout the remainder of the game. Coach Kyle Shanahan referred to McCaffrey’s condition as “knee irritation,” however.
Coach Kyle Shanahan stated, “We’ll see how Elijah goes.”Elijah will probably be out for a while, which will give those other guys more chances.
With 13 minutes, 53 seconds remaining in the third quarter, Mitchell made a first-down carry for no gain, resulting in the injury. After the game, he said that he got twisted up on the play, but he didn’t think the injury was as bad as the one in Chicago.
Mitchell had two catches for 8 yards and seven carries for 35 yards when he left.McCaffrey had 11 carries and four receptions for 17 yards at the end of the game.Five attempts by Mason, each for 25 yards, contributed to the victory’s final flourish.
McCaffrey’s knee pain, according to Shanahan, occurred during the game, and he added, “Hopefully, Christian will be all right, too.”
Shanahan expressed confidence in Mason and rookie Tyrion Davis-Price, who was listed as inactive prior to the game, to help pick up the slack in the event of Mitchell’s expected absence. The trade deadline deal that sent Jeff Wilson Jr. to the Miami Dolphins, who also happen to be the Niners’ next opponent, demonstrated the team’s confidence in those two.
Shanahan stated, “I think JP (Mason) came in there and did a really good job there at the end.”They had every person up there trying to stop the run, and I think you guys saw how tough he is, how he ran it, and how he was able to keep us on the field and not give it back. Then Ty, we’ve been trying to get Ty up.”
When Saints defensive lineman Malcolm Roach hit quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo on the lower left leg while Garoppolo was throwing a pass to receiver Brandon Aiyuk, the 49ers narrowly avoided another loss to their backfield about two minutes after Mitchell’s injury.
Roach quickly rushed to Garoppolo’s sideline when he was flagged for unnecessarily roughhousing him because he was clearly hurt and irritated.
Garoppolo stated, “It’s football, but you have to be smart as players and look out for one another.”That is not appropriate.I’m fine; I’m just sore, but nothing bad.”
Shanahan demonstrated that Garoppolo appeared to emerge from the game alright however he would draw nearer investigation on Monday morning to guarantee there wasn’t any significant wounds to his quarterback.
Shanahan said, “He took some hits today.”I don’t have any specific information on him.Yet, I know he’s sorer than expected. Therefore, we will check on him tomorrow and see how he is doing here.He performed with a lot of guts.”
Garoppolo remained in the game and completed 26 of 37 passes for 221 yards and a touchdown, despite a brief warmup by rookie backup Brock Purdy.
In addition, starting right guard Spencer Burford sustained a sprained right ankle, necessitating a walking boot following the game.Burford may be able to return sooner rather than later because Shanahan said it wasn’t a high ankle sprain.Daniel Brunskill took Burford’s place.
