An earthquake measuring 5.4 on the Richter scale struck the region of Kishtwar in Jammu and Kashmir, according to the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC). The quake, which occurred 30 kilometers southeast of Kishtwar, sent tremors that were felt in Delhi-NCR. Several parts of northern India on Tuesday afternoon.
The EMSC reported that the earthquake had a depth of 60 kilometers. Its epicenter was located 99 kilometers north of Pathankot in northern India. The intensity of the tremors startled school children. It prompted people in shops to rush out for safety. Locals in Srinagar described the event as more intense than the tremors experienced the previous week.
Earlier this month, on June 9, the Union Territory of Ladakh experienced a 3.9 magnitude earthquake, as confirmed by the National Centre for Seismology (NCS). The seismic activity occurred at 10:23:57 IST, with the epicenter situated at coordinates Lat: 35.64 and Long: 76.62. The earthquake took place at a depth of 10 kilometers in the Ladakh region of India.
On the same day, Tezpur in Assam was struck by another earthquake measuring 3.7 in magnitude. The NCS provided details stating that the epicenter was located 39 kilometers west of Tezpur, with a depth of 10 kilometers. The event took place at 10:05 am local time.
The NCS, which functions as the authorized body under the Government of India for monitoring seismic activity, disseminated information about these earthquakes via Twitter. The agency maintains the National Seismological Network, comprising over 150 stations equipped with advanced technology throughout different parts of India.
Shakar Garh, Chichawatni, Sialkot, Mandi Bahauddin, Rawalpindi, Jhelum, Hafizabad, and Zafarwal in Punjab also experienced earthquakes. Abbottabad, Swabi, and Swat in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa were all affected by the earthquake.
The shocks were also reported in the villages of Bagh, DhirKot, and Muzaffarabad in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. Different-sized earthquakes frequently occur in Pakistan.
More than 74,000 people died in Pakistan’s worst earthquake of 2005.
