The UN Security Council has called for an immediate truce between Israel and Hamas in the Gaza Strip. Along with the release of all hostages, despite the US’s refusal to vote.
The resolution put forth by the Council’s ten members and received the support of the remaining 14 council members. On Monday, there was an appraisal in the council chamber. Palestinian envoy Riyad stated that the resolution should serve as a turning point in the result of the war.
He said that Apologies to those who the world has failed. And to those that have been saved but were not. Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant made a declaration outside the White House in Washington . He said his country would not cease the war until the hostages were free. Furthermore, they had no moral right to stop the war while there were still hostages held in Gaza.
US officials argued that the resolution on Rafah is non-binding and won’t jeopardize Qatar’s progress in talks. They’ll continue to communicate with Israel. An assault on Rafah would be a “mistake” even without the delegation’s visit.
At least 1160 people died in bloodiest attack on October 7 according to an AFP analysis An AFP.
WHAT DOES RESOLUTION SAYS ?
In response, Israel promised to destroy Hamas. Over 32,000 people have died as a result of its Gaza campaign. The majority of them were women and children, according to the health ministry in the region controlled by Hamas.
The last-ditch attempt was on Monday by Russia’s envoy Vasily Nebenzia to amend the resolution. They want a “permanent” rather than a “lasting” truce. Accusing the US of still wanting to give Israel “a free hand.” The US National Security Council has passed a resolution supporting a ceasefire in the Middle East.
But not a change in its policy. The resolution does not condemn Hamas. The US has consistently supported a ceasefire as part of a hostage deal.
The resolution acknowledges ongoing talks and does not change the US’s stance on the situation. While Israel holds the UN accountable for not distributing aid, the UN charges Israel with impeding aid. Following the attacks on Israeli villages by Hamas gunmen that claimed 1,200 lives and kidnapped 253 more, the conflict broke out.
COUNSEL’S DEMAND
With 14 votes in favor and an abstention (from the US), Resolution 2728 (2024) was approve. It “demands” that the parties observe an immediate ceasefire for the balance of Ramadan. This will “lead to a lasting sustainable ceasefire.”
It also asks for guaranteeing humanitarian access to attend to the medical and other requirements of the hostages. The unconditional and quick release of all hostages is included. In addition, the Council insists that the parties treat every individual their legal responsibilities under international law.
WHICH COUNTRIES VOTED FOR THE GAZA CEASE-FIRE?
The U.N. Security Council passed a resolution to end the conflict in Gaza. With 14 members voting in favor and the United States abstaining. The resolution includes China, France, Russia, the United Kingdom, also all elected non-permanent members. If any permanent member vetoes, the decision or draft is not approved.
The Council has seen multiple ceasefire draft resolutions quashed by permanent members since the Gaza conflict began.
The US’s vote on the Gaza war, was interpreted by some as a shift in stance which was vetoed by three Security Council resolutions. White House National Security Council spokesman John Kirby denied this, stating it does not represent any policy change.
