Starring Sara Ali Khan as the lead actress portraying Usha Mehta, a young freedom fighter from Bombay, who started an underground radio station – “ Congress Radio” in 1940s to raise her voice against British rule and support the Quit India Movement. The movie is directed by Kannan Iyer, produced by Karan Johar. Other cast includes Sachin Khedekar as Judge Hariprasad Mehta, Usha’s Father, Emraan Hashmi as Ram Manohar Lohia, Anand Tiwari, Abhay Verma, Sparsh Shrivastav.
The story revolves around the life of Usha Mehta – a young girl in Bombay in 1940s, daughter of judge Hariprasad Mehta, who is a great admirer of Winston Churchill and thus Usha Mehta revolts against her own father. The struggle Usha Mehta faced to revolt against her own father, trials and tribulations she faced for setting up India’s own radio station – Congress Radio forms a prominent part of the movie. However the movie was not impactful enough to connect the audience on an emotional level.
Ae Watan Mere Watan lacked emotional depth
Despite having a great storyline, Which revolves around 1940s India freedom movement and the Quit India Movement, the storytelling and screenplay of the movie is dearth in giving goosebumps to the audience and connecting on an emotional level. Although the premise in the movie Ae Watan Mere Watan, is perfect for a cinephile, who loves historical movies.
Sara Ali Khan as a lead actress lacked in portraying the strong, courageous, brave emotions of Usha Mehta. Which is reflected in Ae Watan Mere Watan, lacking to win the hearts of the audience. Even the dialogues like “karo ya Maro”, were not enough to leave a mark on the audience. However Emraan Hashmi as Ram Manohar Lohia in the second half of the movie won the hearts of the audience. He helped Usha Mehta in starting India’s own radio during British rule.
The Marathi movie star Sachin Khedekar as Judge Hariprasad Mehta has played an impactful role in the movie. His role transforms from being against his own daughter to feeling proud of his daughter. Sparsh Shrivastav won the hearts of audiences as Fahad with his amazing acting skills.
The movie however lacked in depicting the real life struggles of the freedom movement and starting the underground radio station during British rule. However, the end of the movie Ae Watan Mere Watan, has some fanbase. The dialogue delivery, sloganeering, songs, screenplay, and storytelling were not impactful enough to connect with the audience on an emotional level.
Worth one time watch
Having a strong storyline and an emotion of patriotism to connect with the audience. Ae Watan Mere Watan failed to have a great impact on the audience. However the movie is worth a watch, as it presents an untold story on India’s freedom history.
