APJ Abdul Kalam was born on 15 October 1931 – 27 July 2015. He was an Indian aerospace scientist and statesman also served as the 11th president of India from 2002 to 2007. He was born and raised in Rameswaram, Tamil Nadu and studied andaero space engineering. He spent the next 4 decades as a scientist and science administrator, mainly at the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) and Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and was involved in military missile development efforts and India’s civilian space programme.
He thus came to be known as the Missile Man of India for his work on the development oballistic missilef and launch vehicle technology. He also played a pivotal organisational, political and technical, role in India’s Pokhran-II nuclear tests in 1998, the first since the original nuclear test by India in 1974.
In 2002 Kalam was elected as the 11th president of India with the support of both the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party and the then opposition Indian National Congress. Referred to as the People’s President . He returned to his civilian life of writing, education, and public service after a single term. He was a recipient of several honored awards, including the India’s highest civilian honour.
While transfering a lecture at the Indian Institute of Management Shillong, Kalam collapsed and died from an apparent cardiac arrest on 27 July 2015.including national level dignitaries, attended the funeral ceremony which was held in his hometown of Rameswaram. where he was buried with full state honours.

Dr Dinesh Badyal the vice principal of medical education at Christian Medical College. He was honored with the prestigious Dr APJ Abdul Kalam Memorial Oration Award by King George Medical University (KGMU) in Lucknow on Friday. This appreciation was presented as part of the celebration of the birth anniversary of Dr APJ Abdul Kalam,affectionately known to be as the people’s president.
The oration sent by Dr Badyal, titled ignited minds in new competency based medical curriculum challenges and way forward. Drew inspiration from Kalam’s famous book, Ignited minds: releasing the power within India. Being a member of the reconciliation board of the former Medical Council of India and the National Curriculum Committee of the National Medical Commission (NMC). Dr Badyal has been involved in casting the development of new competency based MBBS and MD medical curricula in India.
His ample work in this field encompasses faculty training for learning, teaching,assessment, curriculum development, professionalism and ethics, low-resource-intensive simulations in South East Asi. and competency-based curriculum. Dr Badyal’s contributions to research programs and medical education as well as pharmacology initiatives, have earned him immense recognition. With over approx 150 published papers, 3 authored books, and numerous contributions to chapters in alot of publications. his expertise and knowledge are widely respected.
During his oration, Dr Badyal drew attention that these new initiatives in medical curriculum showcase the fabulous potential of India’s vast community of medical educators. The initiatives have been moulded specifically to benefit medical colleges across the country.
